Yamaha has announced the R200A, an all-new entry-level stereo receiver that replaces the long-running R-S202. It carries a $299.95 MSRP, delivers 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms, and is due in November 2026 in black and silver finishes. Yamaha is pitching it at first-time hi-fi buyers as well as enthusiasts who want a simple second-room or desktop system.
Connectivity is where the upgrade is most visible. The R200A adds a dedicated phono input for turntables, Bluetooth with multipoint support so two devices can stay paired at once, and an AM/FM tuner with 40 presets. Outputs cover A/B speaker selection for two pairs of speakers plus a dedicated subwoofer output. Inside, Yamaha cites a center-beam chassis to reduce vibration, improved grounding circuitry, a redesigned heat sink and upgraded binding-post speaker terminals.
The dedicated subwoofer output is the detail that matters most to anyone who tunes. Adding a sub to a small stereo system is one of the easiest ways to fill in the bottom octave, but the receiver is a plain analog stereo amplifier: Yamaha's announcement lists no room-correction routine, no microphone input and no bass management beyond the sub output itself.
Why it matters for tuning: with a basic stereo receiver, level, placement and crossover choices are all yours to set by ear or by measurement. A sub output on a receiver like this typically passes a full-range or simply low-passed signal, so the practical approach is to set the sub's own crossover and level controls, then run a sweep from the listening seat to see where the sub and main speakers overlap. If you see a dip around the crossover region, adjusting the sub's phase or distance usually fixes it before any EQ is needed. Bass peaks from room modes are best handled by moving the sub or the seat first, because a receiver without parametric EQ can't cut them electronically.
The R200A is slated for November 2026 at $299.95 through Yamaha's retail channels. It is a modest, sensible refresh of a classic budget stereo format, and for turntable owners adding a phono stage and sub output in one box at this price, it gives a clean starting point to tune around.
