Massive Audio has launched the DSP48, a 4-input, 8-output digital signal processor announced out of Los Angeles this week. The pitch is a familiar one in 12-volt right now — full processing control without a laptop — and the company is explicit about it. "Many digital signal processors provide powerful features but make system tuning unnecessarily difficult," said John Velez of Massive Audio. "We designed the DSP48 to deliver professional-level control through an interface that is easier to understand and faster to use." Tuning, configuration, and preset management all happen over Bluetooth from an iOS or Android device.

On the processing side the feature list is what you would expect from a modern eight-channel unit, with a couple of things worth flagging. Each output gets selectable parametric EQ from 1 to 15 bands, plus high-pass and low-pass crossovers with selectable frequencies, filter types, and slopes. There is digital time alignment, independent output level and phase adjustment, and six memory presets. Inputs accept both high-level and RCA signals, and there is a built-in 8-volt line driver on board.

Two of the less glamorous features are arguably the most useful in a big install. The DSP48 includes three programmable remote-output sequencers, which can bring amplifiers up in stages rather than all at once — that reduces electrical surge and the turn-on thump that plagues multi-amp systems. There is also installer password protection, so a shop can lock a finished tune against well-meaning customer edits. USB/MP3 media playback rounds it out.

Why it matters for tuning: fifteen bands of parametric EQ per channel is a lot of rope, and in a car it is very easy to hang yourself with it. The temptation with a phone app is to sit in the driver's seat, listen, and pull bands down until something sounds right — but what you hear from one seat in a small, reflective, wildly asymmetric space is not the same as what the system is actually doing. Set your crossovers and time alignment first and verify them with a measurement, because those two get you most of the way there. Only then reach for EQ, and treat each band you add as something you should be able to point at on a graph. If you cannot see the problem in a sweep, an EQ band is not the fix for it.

Pricing and availability were not detailed in the launch announcement. The DSP48 slots into a crowded category — app-controlled eight-channel processors have become the default upgrade path for anyone keeping a factory head unit — and the differentiators are increasingly interface quality and install-side conveniences rather than raw channel count.
